Frequently Asked Questions by Licensees and/or Server / Sellers


1. I don’t own a bar; all I do is bartend. Why would I need RAMP Alcohol Server Training?

2. I do own a bar and I’m confused. Why do I need RAMP training? I’ve had TIPS training in the past so why can’t I just get TIPS or TAM or BARCODE? Why do I need RAMP training to attain my PLCB RAMP certification?

3. What is the cost of RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller Training?

4. How long does the RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller certification last?

5. If I complete my RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller training while employed at one licensed establishment and then obtain employment at another licensed establishment, would my certification be transferable to the other location?

6. How do I show proof to an employer that I am certified?

7. How do I become re-certified when my original certification expires?

8. Where do I go for RAMP Alcohol Server training?

9. The PLCB requires that I have at least 50% of my alcohol service staff trained at all times by an approved RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller Trainer. Would it be advisable to have all of staff trained just in case my numbers would drop below 50%?

10. When my certification expires, does anyone contact me to set up re-certification?


1. If your employer wishes to be RAMP certified by the PA Liquor Control Board, he or she must have at least 50% of their alcohol service staff trained and certified at all times. Some employers now require that all their alcohol service staff be certified.

2. There are many excellent alcohol server / seller training programs such as TIPS, TAM, BARCODE, etc. Most are nationally and internationally recognized alcohol educational programs. RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller training is the training required by the PLCB for certification due to the fact that it concentrates on PA liquor laws and regulations and any recent changes to such.

3. The price varies according to the number of participants in a class. Substantial discounts are offered to larger groups and many times this is accomplished by combining several licensees’ staffs into one training session. This is a common and acceptable practice which can save money for all licensees’ involved.

4. Completion of the program provides certification for two (2) years.

5. Yes, your RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller certification travels with you regardless of where you are employed.

6. You will receive a card upon completion of the training that identifies you as being certified, as well as a completion date and expiration date.

7. You may either go through the original certification process by receiving the classroom instruction and then take the required test or you can go on-line and take the on-line re-certification test for a fee. Either process requires a fee.

8. Most times original RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller training is set up by licensees who desire to have their staff trained all at one time so that they may have the licensed establishment RAMP certified. This training is normally held on the licensed premises while it is closed or during off-peak hours. If you are in need of individual training, arrangements can be made so that you may join another scheduled training session held at another licensee’s establishment. If you are in need of re-certification, you may either go through the above process or go on-line to become re-certified.

9. This really depends upon your employee turn-over rate. If you have a large turn-over of employees, it would be advisable for you to have all your employees receive the RAMP Alcohol Server / Seller training.

10. No, it will be your responsibility to keep track of your certification period. All completion cards issued by Managing Liquor Concepts will have an expiration date on it. Prior to expiration, you should make arrangements to schedule another training session or go on-line to complete the re-certification testing.
